From Smit's artist statement: "Within the community I follow the story of Dominic Anderson, a twenty one year old trans man whose gender transition is a story of trauma and acceptance in New York's most conservative borough.

The exhibition will feature images of the rapidly changing built environment as well as portraiture that captures personal stories of residents. His work documents what he describes as the slow, somewhat reluctant beginnings of the North Shore of Staten' Island's integration into the metropolis of New York City. Using Victory Boulevard as an artery to examine the diverse range of communities on the North Shore, Gareth Smit explores Staten Island's urban centers and cultural communities, and delves into personal stories about living in an urban area during a time of dramatic physical and cultural shifts. The Alice Austen House partnered with the Design Trust for Public Space and Staten Island Arts on the fellowship as part of the organizations' broader planning project, Future Culture. The exhibition is the culmination of his work completed as the Future Culture Photo Urbanism Fellow and is presented at the Alice Austen House. For nearly two years, Smit has been visually documenting the changes and community responses to the multi-million dollar investment in private developments on the North Shore of Staten Island, as well as the city's plans to rezone the Bay St.
